PLY Magazine is running a Spinalong to coincide with the launch of their book, 51 Yarns to Spin Before You Cast Off. You can post your entries on their Facebook, Instagram and Ravelry groups with the hashtags #51yarns, #handspunyarn and #plymagazine. There's a different theme each week and you can find a list of the topics and other information here: plymagazine.co... The best part is that one winner each week gets a one-year subscription to PLY! I've decided to play along in video form as well by creating a video each week to correspond with that week's spinalong theme.
This week it's "2-Ply Yarn" and after examining a couple of examples of my 2-ply, it gets me thinking about the possibilities of this popular yarn structure.
Next week's spinalong topic (starting Monday 14th May) is "Tailspinning". Hope to see you again then!

Even if it might be rushed, still a great episode, thanks
I have been thoroughly enjoying your series 51 Yarn Knit Along. As a new spinner I have learned so much! Thanks for the videos.
I may have a really dumb question. I am a brand new spinner, and I going to try a 2 ply yarn. My question is should I block/set my singles first before I do that? At this time my yarns have what I believe is alot of twist. But do I need the energy in the twist to ply? My antique wheel have one bobbin, which appears to be another issue. Thank you for your videos! I have learned alot from the series.XO from Canada.
Glad you’ve enjoyed it! Not a dumb question at all - there’s no reason why anyone should know this stuff off the top of their heads! Many people recommend leaving the single on the bobbin for a few days to allow the twist to relax a bit before plying but you don’t have to take it off the bobbin, soak and dry it. You could try winding the single onto something else (a toilet roll or kitchen roll tube might work as long as it’s not likely to spring off and get tangled) to get around the single bobbin issue.

If you plyed two 2-plys together would it count as a 4-ply?
When you ply already-plied yarns together it’s a cabled yarn. Two 2-pies plied together would be called a 4-ply cabled or sometimes 2-by-2 cabled yarn. You’d need to put extra ply twist into the 2-ply yarns to make the cable balanced.
@@TinyFibreStudio thank you for the explanation, I hope to be able to spin yarn as well as you and many other people someday. These videos definitely are insightful.
